Public School Driver Education Programs
No public high school, vocational school, municipal or regional school committee or private high school teaching driver education to students enrolled in its academic school program or in a school under its authority or as a continuing education program, shall engage in the business of giving instruction for hire in the operation of a motor vehicle without being licensed for that purpose and designated by the registrar as a licensed Public School Driver Education Program. No license shall be issued unless said program meets all licensing, instructional and operating requirements of M.G.L. c.90 §32G and 540 CMR 23.00 and all published guidelines, policies and procedures.
Driving School applications may be downloaded from the Driving School Applications & Forms section. Applications must be completed in their entirety and filed with the Vehicle Safety & Compliance Services section of the RMV. Public School Driver Education Programs shall be exempt from the initial license and each renewal fee. Additionally, Public School Driver Education Programs shall be exempt from the performance bond requirement. If the Registrar approves an application, a license shall be granted that shall be valid for a period of one year from the date of its issuance.
No Public School Driver Education Program shall employ a person as a driving instructor who does not hold a valid driver’s license and Public School Driver Education Instructor Certificate or Professional Driving School Instructors Certificate issued by the Registrar. All applicants for a Public School Driver Education Instructor Certificate shall meet the licensing requirements outlined in the Professional Driving School Instructor Certification section. All Public School Driver Education Programs shall meet the classroom and instructional vehicle requirements as outlined in the Professional Driving School Licensing Requirements section, and all Record Keeping Requirements. Additionally, all programs shall adhere to the approved Driver Education Program Curriculum and all Driving School Operating and Instructional Requirements .
