Suspension for Criminal Convictions

Suspensions

The Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is required by law to suspend/revoke your learner's permit or driver's license/right to operate if a court convicts you for certain criminal violations. This section covers suspensions/revocations for the more common criminal convictions, but it is not inclusive of all criminal conviction suspensions/revocations. Please refer to the following sections for additional criminal conviction suspensions/revocations:

  • Alcohol or Drug Suspensions
  • Junior Operator (JOL) Suspensions
  • Out-of-State Suspensions
  • Vehicular Homicide/Manslaughter Suspensions

When a court notifies the RMV that you have been convicted of a criminal violation, the RMV will mail a suspension notice to you stating that the RMV will suspend/revoke your learner's permit or driver's license/right to operate ten days from the date the notice is issued.

You have the right to an RMV hearing, but only to challenge the accuracy of the record. For more information, please refer to Hearings Sites & Schedules
