Get Ready to Go

To obtain a new title for your vehicle, you must submit the following either via the mail to:
Mass DOT, Title Division
PO Box 55889, Boston, MA 02205

or in person at any RMV Full Service Center:

  • An Application for Title (RMV-1 Form) completed and signed by the owner. If the vehicle was purchased from a Massachusetts licensed dealer, the dealer will complete the RMV-1 Form. If there is a lien against the vehicle, the lienholder information must be complete and accurate on the RMV-1 Form.
  • Certificate of Origin (new vehicles only), previous owner's Certificate of Title assigned to the new owner, Dealer Re-Assignment form (if applicable), or the previous registration and the bill of sale (for vehicles that are exempt from title because of their age)
  • $75.00 title fee
  • 6.25% MA sales tax or applicable sales tax exemption form

When will I receive the title?

Please allow two (2) to four (4) weeks for the tile to be processed and mailed. If there is a lienholder on the vehicle, by law the title will be mailed directly to the lienholder.

Please Note: If you are going to title and register your vehicle, you must go to a licensed Massachusetts insurance agent to obtain an active insurance policy and have the agent stamp and sign your RMV-1 Form.
